Amercements list, 1791-1822 1791, 1812, 1822.

List of individuals required to pay amercements. Amercements are pecuniary penalties, similar to fines, imposed upon a person for some fault or misconduct. They differ from fines in that the latter are created by statute and amercements are arbitrarily imposed. Entries give names of defendant and plaintiff. Amounts listed in dollars (most are thirty cents). Lists given by county courts to sheriffs for collection. Lists for Anne Arundel County (1812), Frederick County (1791), and Prince George's County (1822) only. See also the Fines and Forfeitures series [MSA S0109] and the MARYLAND STATE PAPERS Series A [MSA S1004]. Arranged by county.
